The first Mary Ryan's bookshop was opened in 1975, at 150 Edward Street in Brisbane City. After nine years of trading in the Brisbane CBD, Mary Ryan's relocated to a quaint worker's cottage in the suburb of Paddington. Mary Ryan's Paddington was officially opened by Sir Joh Bjelke-Peterson, then Premier of Queensland, at 179 Latrobe Terrace in 1984. A unique feature is the terraced courtyard at the rear of the building. Complete with gazebo, the courtyard is still used regularly for author events and children's parties and storytelling.
Mary Ryan's Paddington was franchised in April 2007. Franchise owner Stephanie Hogan is an avid reader and with her background as a teacher she can usually be found helping children make their book selections.
The Mary Ryan Paddington store has had a long history of launching new books and new authors. Stephanie and her husband Peter are keen to continue this tradition and the new decks make the perfect venue. Look out for our quarterly Good Book Guide for an eclectic selection of new release titles. If you can't decide on a gift for that special occasion, Mary Ryan gift vouchers are available.
